The birthplace of Catholicism in Los Angeles County
Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded on September 8, 1771, and continues to serve as the cornerstone for the Catholic faith community in Los Angeles County. We are a richly diverse parish stewarded by the Claretian Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and called to respond to the needs of our community through love, justice and peace.
"In the 18th and 19th centuries, Mission San Gabriel - long before it became a tourist mecca or the modern parish that it is today-was at the center of the collission and blending of Native and European culture and religion. The history of those encounters reverberates to this very day. It was here, one might argue, where California actually began, in the interations of people foreign to one another, in their struggles to understand one another, to live and pray alongside one another, to learn from one another, and to create something new together." Steven Hackel, Historian
Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, the Godmother of Los Angeles, lies 9.8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Our newly curated museum exhibit and Native American garden make it a must see whether you are a native Angeleno or visiting the San Gabriel Valley.
